Abstract

Phillip and Samuel Drachman came to the United States from Russian Poland during the 1850s in order to escape conscription in the Czar's army. The Drachman brothers settled in the Arizona Territory and became merchants in Tucson. The family gained prominence within the community, working in business and philanthropy.

Abstract Emanuel Saltiel was born in Bath, England in 1844 and emigrated to the United States, joining the Confederate army in 1864. In 1866 Saltiel, now a member of the Union army under the name Joseph Isaacs, was court-martialed for treason. He moved to Colorado, became involved with many of the Jewish organizations in Denver as well as businesses such as the Denver Daily Times, and invested in two mines near Cotopaxi, CO, offering to populate them with Jewish farmers and promising high wages, good...

Scope and Contents I. E. (Isadore Elkan) Solomon was born on May 23, 1841 in Kruschwitz, Prussia and moved to Pennsylvania in 1858. He became a US citizen in 1865 and married Anna Freudenthal in 1872 after meeting her in Poland. They moved to Arizona with their three children in 1876, opening a store shortly afterward in the town that came to be known as Solomonville.
